Scaling Yields and Editing Recipes

Cook:RE makes it easy to adjust batch sizes, customize recipe ingredients or steps, and revert changes directly on your device.

Scaling Servings and Batch Sizes

When cooking for a larger crowd or scaling down a recipe for two:

  1. Open the recipe in Cook:RE.
  2. In the Scaled panel directly below the recipe title, use the + or − buttons to step the batch size up or down (e.g., ½×, 1½×, 2×).
  3. To enter an exact multiplier, tap the scaled yield text (e.g., 1× · 4 servings) to type a custom factor.
  4. All ingredient quantities and inline cooking amounts update automatically throughout the recipe.
  5. Units adapt intelligently (e.g., scaling 2 tbsp up by 4× displays as ½ cup where appropriate).

Editing Recipes Directly in the App

To modify any part of a recipe, tap the ... (More options) button in the top navigation bar. Cook:RE provides three focused editors:

  • Recipe details: Tap Recipe details to edit the recipe title, default yield or serving count, prep time, cook time, and source link. Tap Save to apply changes.
  • Edit ingredients: Tap Edit ingredients to adjust any ingredient’s quantity, unit, name, or preparation note. Drag the handle to reorder ingredients, or tap Add Ingredient to insert new items. Tap Done to save.
  • Edit steps: Tap Edit steps in the menu—or long-press any step directly in the recipe’s Steps list—to refine instruction text, add cooking durations or temperatures, reorder instructions, or insert new steps. Tap Done to save.

Version History and Undo

Cook:RE tracks revisions every time changes are saved:

  • Undo and Redo: After making edits, Undo (⤺) and Redo (⤼) buttons appear in the top navigation bar to quickly step through recent changes (or use ⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z on an attached keyboard).
  • Browsing Version History: Tap the ... (More options) button in the top navigation bar and select History. This opens the revision history sheet, where you can inspect past revisions, review previous versions of ingredients and steps, and restore any earlier revision or return to the original imported recipe.
