Cook Mode, Steps, and Timers
How to use Cook:RE's cooking mode, step checklists, ingredient strike-outs, timers, and Live Activities.
Cook Mode, Steps, and Timers
Cook mode is designed for hands-on cooking in the kitchen: it keeps your screen awake, groups the ingredients needed for each step directly alongside its instructions, lets you check off steps and used ingredients as you go, and runs interactive countdown timers.
Entering Cook Mode
- Open any recipe in your library.
- Tap the Start Cooking button at the bottom of the screen.
Managing Steps and Ingredients
In Cook Mode, recipe steps and their associated ingredients appear sequentially:
- Opening and Closing Steps: Tap any step to expand or collapse it, keeping your focus on the active task.
- Striking Out Ingredients: Ingredients required for the active step are listed directly below the instruction. Tap an ingredient to mark it as used, striking it through so you can easily track what has been added.
- Scaled Quantities: If you scaled the recipe before entering Cook Mode, all step ingredient amounts reflect your chosen yield.
Timers
When a recipe instruction mentions a cooking duration (such as “simmer for 15 minutes” or “bake for 25 to 30 minutes”), Cook:RE highlights the duration as an interactive timer:
- Tap the highlighted duration to start a countdown timer.
- You can run multiple simultaneous timers for different steps.
- Active timers can be adjusted or cancelled at any time from the timer list.
Lock Screen Live Activities and Alarms
- Lock Screen Tracking: Even when you lock your device or switch to another app, active timers remain visible on your Lock Screen, and in the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones.
- Alarm Sound Settings: In Preferences → Timers, choose how Cook:RE alerts you under When a timer finishes:
- Sound and vibration: Plays an audible alert sound accompanied by vibration.
- Vibration only: Silences audio alerts for quieter environments.
